Logos are generally defined as a graphic element that’s purpose is to promote the identity and gain public recognition of a certain brand or person. Great logos come in different shape, sizes and colours. Some people and organizations prefer their company or personal logo to be colourful and striking while others like theirs to be plain black and white. No matter the colour, design or shape, the most important point is that the logo must be memorable and unique to the audience. We are sure that you remember some world famous logos like BMW, McDonalds and Uniqlo right? Logo design is a very challenging, yet very rewarding task as designers have to transfer the core meaning and symbol of the company with only a few words and shapes.

In today’s article, our focus will be on black and white logos. In its essence, almost all logo designs begin with a simple sketch in black and white before more intrinsic design and colours are added in. A logo design in black and white represents the logo in its basic and simplest form. That is the reason why, some companies and organisations prefer to have their logo in black and white instead of colourful. Black and white is not only simple, but is looks classy, elegant and professional at the same time.

Nike, Playboy and Chanel are some of the worldwide names that use a straightforward black and white logo design. Despite the simplicity, people around the world recognise these brands with ease. Not only that, black and white logos can be improved with colours later on to add a little bit of spice and diversity to the original design.

Without the usage of colours, the other elements in a logo hold a bigger importance in representing the company and the story. Nike is famous for its tick, Playboy for its playboy bunny while Chanel is well known for its double C’s. When people see these shapes, they immediately recall the company, even without having to look at the name of the company below the logo. This shows that simplicity is one of the keys in black and white logos.

Other factors like font and image size also affect the effectiveness of a logo in reaching out to the targeted audience group. But we will discuss further about that in another article. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy our collection of beautiful black and white logos below!
