Kinetic means motion, and therefore kinetic photography simply means photography in motion, or moving photography! As defined by online sources, kinetic photography is an experimental photography technique in which the photographer uses movement in the camera to produce a photo.
Most kinetic photographers do not directly hold their cameras, but instead leave their cameras dangling by its wrist strap while capturing a photo. The photographer will then shake, move, swing or spin his or her wrist to capture a photo. What results of this technique is a very abstract and blurred motion photo. The results of kinetic photography is really unpredictable, always abstract and never the same. But photographers, please be warned that kinetic photography might result in a broken camera and burn a hole in your wallet!
The most risky (and potentially costly) type of kinetic photography is camera tossing. In this technique, the cameraman tosses his gear up into the air to create the motion required to capture a stunning kinetic photo. To make a kinetic photo even more electrifying, experts suggest that photographers use a timer or slow shutter speed setting. Photographers should use this setting, press the shutter button and immediately release their camera into the air (the slow shutter setting causes the photograph to be taken when the camera reaches the apex of its flight) and then retrieve their camera before it hits the ground.
Most kinetic photography occur in dim lighted areas or during the night so that the camera can capture the light emitted from the subject along with exposure, thus resulting in a series of random and blurred light patterns. Kinetic photography is usually not done under the sunlight or in bright areas as a brightly lit background will cause the light emitted from the object to be less vibrant and colourful, thus lowering the quality of the kinetic photograph being captured.
If you are still wondering how kinetic photography can create amazing and often unique photos, have a look at the collection that we have compiled below. This kinetic photography post was specially prepared to inspire you guys and girls out there to check out kinetic photography for yourselves. All the images below are linked to the photographer’s own websites, just in case you want to check out their other amazing artworks and photography. Enjoy!
